Planned matings are basic of breeding success
After inspection of the broad mare honoring her benefits and recognizing her little faults one needs to search for the complementing stallion who ensures the good points of the mare and egalizes her failings.
For every dam we try to find the best matching stallion. The stallion shall confirm genetics of good characteristics of the mare and he shall compensate her flaws. Of course wide hoofs can not be compensated by small and narrow hoofs but only by correct hoofs.
The list of characteristics that need to be recognized is quite long:
type conformation fundament movements healthness Charakter fertility eagerness endurance rideability jumping ability surefooting and dexterity strong nerves longevity
Unfortunately you cannot measure every feature and for most of them you will not find reliable information. No stallion owner will proudly shout about allergic reactions or OCD on his beloved horse. Because of the wide spread population it takes large-scale to meet a great number of offspring off a stallion to learn about his genetic qualitiies.
We love to visit Shagya-Arabian breeders and events and learn with wide open eyes and ears. Also we use the database system HORSEBASE by ZSAA to find detailed information about anchestors, relatives and offspring of stallions of interest. This system gives you breeding values and lets you do virtual coverings and is a great help.
During winter time on long cold nights we read stallion books and plan matings on paper and in HORSEBASE before we start in early spring to visit the most intersting stallions for inspection and to proof what we have read.
